Based on our founder Yukichi Fukuzawa's "spirit of practical learning" (or Jitsugaku), Keio University aims to further contribute to society through its activities in education, research, and medical care by taking a cross-disciplinary approach, harnessing the strengths we possess as a comprehensive university.

There are many significant challenges the world is facing today, but some of the most important issues that Japan in particular must address first include the declining birthrate and aging population, creation of new values in tandem with the proliferation of generative AI, and those related to the security of the economy, region, and daily life.

To solve these issues, Keio University is conducting cross-disciplinary research centered on its three interdisciplinary research initiatives of "Longevity," "Security," and "Creativity." As part of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's (MEXT) Top Global University Project, which ran from AY2014 to AY2023, we conceptualized the theme of "Enhancing Sustainability of Global Society Through Jitsugaku," and advanced the research and educational programs of each initiative.

Drawing upon the ten years of experience gleaned from the TGU Project, we will continue to contribute to the development of a global society and nurture future leaders of the world by strengthening collaboration with our international partner institutions, and promoting advanced interdisciplinary and international research.

SDGs at Keio

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 international goals adopted at the UN Summit in September 2015. These are universal goals for both developing and developed countries that aim for a sustainable and better world by 2030. Under the principle of "Leave no one behind," the 17 goals, which consists of 169 targets, cover issues such as poverty, inequality, climate change, environment, peace and prosperity, and justice.

Keio University participated in the MEXT Top Global University Project from 2014 through 2023, adopting the goal of "Enhancing Sustainability of Global Society Through Jitsugaku." We are engaged in various activities related to the SDGs as an educational and research institution with a university hospital, and as a research university that contributes to both the global and regional communities.

Global Partnerships

Keio University has concluded partnership agreements with over 340 universities and institutions of higher education worldwide, and is enhancing student exchange, academic exchange, and research collaboration activities. In order to give our students the opportunity to develop the skills and expertise necessary to become leaders of the global society, we offer 31 double degree programs with overseas universities, the most among Japanese universities (as of June 2023). We also offer approximately 1,000 courses that are taught in English on our campuses. Furthermore, as a member of university consortiums such as the World Economic Forum's (WEF) Global University Leaders Forum (GULF), U7+Alliance, Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU), Japan-UK Research and Education Network for Knowledge Economy Initiative (RENKEI), and ASEAN+3UNet, we collaborate with overseas universities and actively carry out various activities as a university that contributes to both the global and regional communities.
